Liberty and Justice for All, III

Description: In 2008/9, MFH will continue its "Liberty and Justice for All" initiative. We will 1) offer up to $10K (twice the limit of regular grants) for public humanities projects on the LJA theme 2) focus our annual symposium on the role of religion in our democracy 3) offer a film discussion series commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Federal abolition of the foreign slave trade and 4) design a thematic rotating schedule for public libraries to display and discuss the "Picturing America" images.

Exploring Landmark Supreme Court Cases: A Document Based Questions Approach

Goal: The development of a resource book and a website for high school teachers and students on important Supreme Court cases primarily dealing with the interpretation of the Bill of Rights.
Description: We propose to develop the "Exploring Landmark Supreme Court Cases: A Document-Based Questions Approach" teacher resource book and website guide to help high school students comprehend key constitutional issues in 19 landmark Supreme Court cases. Each case will provide educational resources that include a brief summary of the case within its historial context, as well as excerpts from case briefs, oral arguments, the relevant sections of the Constitution, and the majority, concurring, and dissenting opinions. A series of questions will help students interpret and analyze the intellectual arguments. The website component will add interactiveness and flexibility to the resource book by incorporating a multimedia component.

Through book discussion groups, author tours, on-line activities, museum exhibits, and children's activities, AMPU uses literature to invite people in Wisconsin to shape and inform views on political integrity, the nature of democracy, and the roots of today’s system of justice. AMPU prompts Wisconsinites to consider the benefits of participatory democracy.
