Title: Silver Jubilee Campaign to Endow the Seymour Gitin Senior Research Professorship and to Renovate and Endow the Hostel

Description: The W.F. Albright Institute for Archaeological Research is seeking an NEH Challenge Grant as part of its campaign to endow a new senior fellowship, to be named the Seymour Gitin Senior Research Professor in honor of its long-time director, and to renovate and endow its hostel located in a historic landmark structure which primarily serves the fellows who participate in the Albright's programs. With a commitment from the Dorot Foundation contingent on the Albright's success with this Challenge Grant, the hostel will be renamed the Joy Gottesman Ungerleider Hostel. Located in Jerusalem, the Albright represents more than a century of outstanding research conducted by American scholars in such diverse fields as biblical and Near Eastern archaeology, linguistic, philological and text-based studies, ancient history, art history, and anthropology. These two campaign goals will allow the Albright to maintain its position as the premier American research center in the Middle East.

Description: The W.F. Albright Institute is applying for one twelve-month and one six-month post-doctoral fellowship for each of the academic years 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10. These would be continuous, residential fellowships at the institute, which is located in Jerusalem. Fellows are expected to pursue a senior level research project, give a public lecture to the academic community while in residence, and participate in the activities of the institute's scholarly community. The fellows' research projects should culminate in a scholarly publication(s). The Albright is dedicated to pursuing research across the entire gamut of ancient Near Eastern Studies, from pre-history through the early Islamic Period. The impact of this research, transmitted through its hundreds of alumni to institutions all over the world, has had a profound effect on our understanding of the growth of western civilization and its origins in the ancient Near East.
