The Iraqi Jewish Archive

Goal: The creation of an item-level collection assessment and inventory database of books and documents in Hebrew, Judeo-Arabic, and Arabic that provide evidence of the history and culture of the Jewish community in Iraq since 762 BCE. A sample of the variety of paper-based materials in the archives would be conserved as a testbed for a future phase of the project.
Description: The Center for Jewish History is seeking funding for a project to ensure the preservation and accessibility of the recently discovered Iraqi Jewish Archive. With more than 500,000 volumes and 100 million documents and artifacts on its campus and access to myriad catalog entries related to archives of the Jewish community, the Center for Jewish History is well poised to oversee the following activities: Creation of an inventory database to document the Archive’s contents; Photograph digitally title pages so that the items can be catalogued; Assure a basic item level conservation assessment by experts in the field; and preserve a small number of items in the archive to demonstrate the feasibility of conserving the entire archive.

Iraq ReCollection: A Proposal for Preserving Iraq's Cultural Heritage

Goal: Digitizing the complete runs of nine journals (104,590 pages) in humanities disciplines published in Arabic from 1911 to the present that document the prehistory, history, and culture of Iraq; creating catalog records for these serials; developing an open-archives searchable database; and making these materials available on the World Wide Web.
Description: Project Iraq ReCollection will digitize a select group of scholarly Iraqi journals held by Yale and the University of Pennsylvania including the complete runs of 9 journals published in Arabic to create an electronic archive of these digitized files that permits retrieval and display via the Internet, and integration into other existing electronic systems, so that scholars in Iraq and around the world can easily gain access to this important segment of Iraq's print heritage. The small project will also develop an approach and best practices for scanning Arabic and Middle-East language-based humanistic content in order to facilitate access to scarcely held and disappearing materials for a key world region.

Rescuing Iraqi Archaeological Reports

Description: In this project three Iraqi and three American archeologists will cooperate to produce monographs and articles in Arabic and English based on important excavations and surveys carried out by the Iraqi participants over the past forty years. These publications will recreate, in great part, manuscripts lost in the looting of the editorial offices of the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities in April 2003.

Remote Sensing and GIS Training and Research for Iraqi Archaeologists

Goal: An intensive training program for two faculty members each from Baghdad and Mosul Universities and two members of the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage in remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS).
Description: This project focuses on a four-month training program in Remote Sensing and GIS for professional Iraqi archaeologists drawn from the State Board of Antiquities and Baghdad and Mosul Universities. The course will focus on the utility of these techniques for research, site protection and site management. By the end of the program, the faculty will have the skills to teach these materials on their return to Iraq. Coincident with the training program, we will survey archaeological sites in the key Nippur, Uruk and Eridu survey areas using recent high resolution Digital Globe imagery for evidence of site damage from looting and development, recording new sites, ancient landscape features and intra-site details.
